SLOW CITY 2023: WINNING VIDEO
#SlowCity
We continue with news about the #SlowCity project. After receiving recognition in the “education and citizen action” category on the occasion of World Environment Day, the first phase of this year’s Slow City project also ends with the jury’s decision: we now have the winning video for the 2023 edition of the contest .
The contestants of this edition have highlighted in their video the need for a speed of 30km/h to avoid fatalities and injuries in urban mobility, framing, first, the cultural paradigm change that must be achieved.
And you, what do you think of the rule of driving at 30 km/h in cities? You may have wondered if it is a good measure or not. The 30 km/h limitation in some cities and areas has generated a lot of controversy, especially among drivers. Some see it as a loss of rights and freedom, while others applaud it as a way to gain security and quality of life.
But what is true in these arguments? What benefits and challenges does this standard have for mobility and urban management? Speed 30 not only improves road safety, but also has benefits for the environment, health and coexistence. By reducing speed, noise and air pollution is reduced, the use of alternative means of transport such as bicycles or scooters is encouraged, accessibility and inclusion of people with reduced mobility is facilitated, and a friendlier public space is created. and participatory.
The students of the Autonomous University of Barcelona have tried to answer these questions through their video. And one thing is clear, slowing down saves lives.
In the video you can see how they interview different people who use the scooter and ask them about this topic. You will be surprised to see the answers they give. Some say they don’t know what the limit is, others say they ignore it because it seems too low, and others say they don’t understand why you have to go so slowly. What do you think? Do you think it is necessary to respect the speed limit for safety or coexistence? Or do you think it is an absurd rule that limits your freedom? We invite you to watch the video and leave your comments. We hope you like it and it makes you think!
At P(A)T we firmly believe in the need to raise awareness among citizens about the importance of changing cultural values that favor aggressive and selfish mobility.
