MEETING WITH MR. LUIS DEL RIO COURT PROSECUTOR ROAD SAFETY COORDINATOR
With the farewell celebration to Don Bartolomé Vargas, former prosecutor of the Road Safety Coordinator of the State Attorney General's Office, Mr. Luís del Río makes way.
On December 19, Vicente Sánchez, president of P(A)T, met with the new Road Safety Coordinating Prosecutor Mr. Luis del Río to talk about the future of road safety and discuss issues that we consider essential.
- Repeat offenders: We ask the prosecutor’s office to ensure that repeat offenders do not have as many opportunities to return to driving and endanger themselves and others. They need to pass a medical and psychological exam that affirms that they are now okay to drive.
- Permission for points: limit the number of times it can be repeated so that repeat offenders do not have as many possibilities of causing another accident when they have lost it more than 2 times.
- Vehicle confiscation: withdrawing the driving license is not enough for some aggressors who drive without a license and continue to be a danger to society.
- Attention to victims: the data show that victims of accidents are still not fully protected by the Crime Victim Statute. At a time of such vulnerability, victims need to be supported by the administration and society.
- Trials that last for years and years: multiple accident trials with deaths can last up to 12 years due to the union of the claim of economic and justice issues, that is, due to the mixture of civil and criminal. With an accident there is already a misfortune, the mourning should not be eternal, nor be aggravated because there is no resolution.
- Road Safety Commission: coordination with victims’ associations is needed to join forces and focus efforts.
- Meetings with the Prosecutor’s Office: sharing information becomes infinitely necessary.
- Communicate to the society of the Great Drama, why if it does not communicate, it cannot be asked for collaboration to avoid it.
Vicente Sánchez, president of P(A)T, values the meeting very positively and the Prosecutor, a very receptive and generous man for his time.
Let’s hope that the good work of the Prosecutor’s Office continues, since it is an essential element for the victims because when such an unexpected tragedy happens to someone, they are not in a position to seek their defense.
The Prosecutor’s Office must be here for everyone.
