WHAT DO TRAFFIC VICTIMS EXPECT FROM POLICE OFFICERS?
We have participated in the traffic course of the Public Security Institute of Catalonia (ISPC) where we were invited to present the association and explain to aspiring traffic police officers what victims expect from professionals in these delicate situations.
In the different sessions we had the opportunity to debate and reflect on the fundamental role of traffic officers both in accident prevention and in the post-accident.
At this meeting, we highlighted the importance of truth, the feeling of justice and reparation for damage to close the grieving process of the victims. The applicants understood that their work plays a crucial role in the reconstruction of the accidents, the determination of responsibilities and the repair of damages. They understood that an impeccable report not only provides an objective basis for justice, but also contributes to the emotional healing process of victims and their families.
However, the most impressive thing about the session was the participation of the victims of traffic accidents themselves, who shared their personal experiences and their point of view on what they expect from the police in such delicate situations. One of the witnesses explained how the way in which the news of a child’s death is given can profoundly affect their experience. He highlighted the importance of sensitivity and respect in these critical moments, and how the presence of the police officers who were with his son in her last moment was comforting and necessary.
He also explained how a poor report can impact a person’s life, forcing them to fight to prove the truth and seek justice for their child. These personal experiences highlighted the responsibility and weight of the work of traffic police, and how their actions can have a profound impact on the lives of the people affected.
In summary, the session highlighted the importance of human warmth in the work of traffic police officers. Empathy, respect and understanding are tools as essential as the objective and legal task. Beyond evidence and laws, police officers are facilitators in the recovery process for victims, helping them find truth, justice and emotional peace.
We take this opportunity to thank you for your dedication and commitment to this important mission of accident prevention and support for traffic victims. Together, we continue to work for a safer and more humane future on the streets and highways.
