MOTORCYCLES PARKED ON THE SIDEWALK
We want streets to live in
Between March and May of this year, the entities of Catalunya Camina and Eixample Respira carried out a study on the parking of two-wheeled vehicles (motorbikes and mopeds).
It must be taken into account, as specified in their report, that “The Barcelona vehicle and pedestrian ordinance, in article 40, allows, in some situations, parking on the sidewalk, that is, on the existing pedestrian space . In general terms, it allows the motorcycle to be parked semi-battery if the street has more than 6m of free width (that is, without terraces or other obstacles) and parallel to the road, if it has less than 6m and more than 3m .” However, the results revealed that in the studied areas more motorcycles and mopeds are parked on the sidewalk than on the road, and that more than 85% parked on the sidewalk are incorrectly parked. With these data, they estimate that in Barcelona around 90,000 motorcycles and mopeds are parked on the sidewalk incorrectly every day, despite the fact that only 13 fines are imposed per day for this reason.
For all of the above, they conclude that there is a tendency to park badly because the administration tolerates it and they propose a series of measures to amend this situation.

From P(A)T we support the recommendations proposed to improve walkability and favor accessibility for everyone, since the space occupied on the sidewalk by motorcycles makes it difficult to coexist on public roads and eliminates areas that could be available, for example for benches where people can rest on their journeys or share moments and conversations, contributing to the creation of streets for life.
