SYMBOL CAMPAIGN AGAINST ROAD VIOLENCE

The symbol of the black ribbon with broken lines simulating a street or highway is the insignia against road violence and in support of traffic victims. Its author is Mr. Tomás Calles, collaborator of P(A)T in the Delegation of the Valencian Community. In 2011 it was adopted by the European Federation of Road Victims (FEVR) which represents more than 25 associations from 17 European countries, being adopted throughout the world as a commemorative symbol of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

WORLD DAY OF REMEMBER FOR TRAFFIC VICTIMS

Did you know that every year around 1.25 million people die as a result of traffic accidents around the world? These accidents are the main cause of death for young people between 15 and 29 years old and almost half of the victims are pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. But these human losses can be avoided.

Furthermore, each year around 50 million people are seriously injured due to traffic accidents, with the consequences that this entails.

Since 1993, the Association for the Prevention of Traffic Accidents P(AT) commemorates the World Day in memory of Traffic Victims promoted by the founder of the English association Road Peace, Brigitte Chaundry, and which was adopted by victims’ organizations. of traffic accidents under the auspices of the European Federation of Road Victims (FEVR).

On October 26, 2005, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the third Sunday of November as the World Day of Remembrance for Victims of Trafficking.

On this day, tribute is paid to the people who died and were seriously injured in a traffic accident and to their families. It is also a recognition of the dedication of those who work to improve the lives of the victims and to give visibility to the magnitude of the human disaster. that traffic accidents cause and their impact on families and society as a whole.

MUNICIPALITIES AND THE WORLD DAY IN MEMORY OF TRAFFIC VICTIMS

On the occasion of the World Day in Memory of Traffic Victims, which is celebrated on the third Sunday in November, from the Association for the Prevention of Traffic Accidents P(A)T, we want to develop a campaign in municipalities in Spain so that they commit to publicly with road safety and support for victims and families.

Symbols help to graphically and clearly express objectives and values: such as solidarity, support and fighting for a cause. For this reason, all city councils that want to join the initiative are invited so that during the weekend of November 16 and 17, the town councils display the Symbol against Road Violence on their facades, in a similar way to what is done with occasion of other events such as the day to fight breast cancer (pink ribbon), world day to fight AIDS (red ribbon), fight against gender violence (violet ribbon) or fight against terrorism (black ribbon). ).

We want to involve all City Councils to give visibility to the great massacre that involves the continuous trickle of deaths and serious injuries due to traffic accidents. The “visibility” of the victims and the consequences of traffic accidents is part of prevention. Our intention is that Road Safety is a priority for all administrations and that we all commit and act to save lives.

The symbol of the black ribbon with broken lines simulating a street or highway is the emblem of these objectives: the reduction of the number of dead and injured people on the streets and highways of our country and the support and solidarity towards those people who suffer the serious consequences.

HOW TO JOIN THE INITIATIVE?

Place the Symbol against Road Violence on the outside of the City Hall façade during the week of the third Sunday in November.
