PROPOSALS TO POLITICAL PARTIES ON MOBILITY AND ROAD SAFETY

Victims and vulnerable ask for protection and attention. Political leaders have a responsibility and our representatives must explain to us their plans to protect us and avoid so many misfortunes in mobility.

Barely a month ago we had municipal and regional elections in some CCAAs, and one of the things that has been seen is that mobility has gained prominence in the debates and that there is evident concern among the population on this issue. Despite this, we see that the political leaders do not take this issue seriously and if we do not see the evolution of road safety in recent years that has been devastating and has caused a lot of pain in many families and has a direct impact on well-being and the health of citizens.

We should not forget that we have three objectives for the coming years that are fully valid and achievable if we seriously commit to them:

  • The general objective of Vision Zero for the year 2050 (zero deaths or serious injuries due to mobility), implies a complete renewal of regulations and standards related to mobility and a high involvement of public authorities. Little has been said about this change by the State.
  • The objective of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030: In September 2020 it was proclaimed by the United Nations and its goal is a 50% reduction in deaths and serious injuries in mobility between 2021 and 2030, urging governments to implement policies and programs that make it possible. It is the third decade of action and unfortunately the previous one did not reach the objectives set.
  • Making road safety an omnipresent topic in the public debate (as fortunately it is happening with climate change and pollution). It is important that it be a current political and public issue.

Failure to comply with the objectives set seems not to worry even political parties and public officials. It is as if the issue of death on roads and cities was not important since we have heard few statements and comments.

And yet, according to provisional data from the DGT, as of June 30, 2023, 500 people have died on the roads, and it is outrageous. Can we continue to accept that deaths on the streets and highways due to mobility are assumed as normal? Well, we think not and we also know the recipe to put an end to it, but we must commit ourselves, we must act resolutely and not forget that as political leaders they have co-responsibility and it is also in their hands to put an end to the daily trickle of victims of traffic

P(A)T wants to contribute to the necessary improvement of people’s mobility, which must be based on road safety and the protection of health and the environment, and for this purpose in this document it proposes to political parties to include a series of measures and actions in their electoral programs but above all in their political performance once the elections have passed, adopting road safety as a top priority issue for the health and well-being of the population.
