MAKING VISIBLE THE VICTIMS: 3 deaths due to a traffic accident in Sant Boi de Llobregat in 2020

The figures of the statistics should not be used as a trophy, but to help raise awareness of the individual and shared responsibility that we all have in front of road violence.

On November 21, the world day in memory of the victims of traffic accidents was commemorated.

On April 30, the Observatori de la Ciutat –Open Data of the Sant Boi de Llobregat City Council- published the annual report that the Public Safety Area (Planificació i Anàlisi) with the title “Anàlisi de l’accidentalitat amb victimes any 2020”.

The headline indicates that “The number of traffic accidents has been reduced by 18% during 2020” and throughout it, it is stated that “During 2020 hasn’t been registered any accident with mortal victims”.

However, the reality is that there was a traffic accident with 3 victims on April 6 on the C-245 in which 4 vehicles were involved (3 trucks and 1 passenger car) that left 3 fatalities as published by several the media as well as individuals via social networks, which although it was on an interurban road, occurred in the municipality of Sant Boi.

We understand that it may be a matter of competencies, but out of respect for the victims and their families, and for a matter of transparency, we believe that the incident should have been included given its seriousness. The statistics should not be used as a trophy, but to help raise awareness of the individual and shared responsibility that we all have in front of road violence.

In this sense, the next reports should reflect the fatalities that also occur on interurban roads within the municipality.

P(A)T and the local delegation of Catalunya Camina in Sant Boi de Llobregat (Sant Boi Camina) are two non-profit NGOs.

In the case of P(A)T, since 1968 it has been working to prevent traffic accidents and to improve the quality of life of the victims. In 2019, we received the silver medal with a blue badge for the merit of Road Safety by the Minister of the Interior of the Government of Spain, Mr. Fernando Grande Marlaska.

Sant Boi Camina was established in 2008 and in 2013 it received a diploma from the Local Police for its contribution to collective security. Catalunya Camina has been working since 1991 –first under the name of Barcelona Camina– to give visibility and improve the conditions of the citizens’ movements on foot.
